The term “mental health” is something we often casually throw around but rarely do we take the time to really think about what it means. Mental health is a complex and multi-layered concept that encompasses so much more than just your mental health. It involves how you feel, how you act, how you interact with others in your life, and how well-supported you feel by those around you. In other words, mental health goes beyond just what happens inside your head. It involves everything from your physical and emotional well-being to self-care and spirituality.

1. Maintain a healthy lifestyle. A healthy body starts with a healthy diet. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Limit your intake of processed foods (i.e., bread, chips, etc.). Exercise daily to improve your mood and reduce stress.

2. Get enough sleep every night. Sleep deprivation not only makes you feel depressed but also increases your risk of developing other mental illnesses like anxiety and PTSD

3. Spend time outside in nature whenever possible. Spending time outdoors has been proven to reduce depression as well as restore mental clarity

4. To lessen anxiety, try deep breathing techniques or meditation

5. When feeling overwhelmed by life’s challenges or problems, take time out for yourself — find something that helps reduce stress

6. Stay connected with those around you through positive connections

7. Be kind to yourself — give yourself permission to be imperfect; nobody is perfect!
