What is Breast Cancer?

Breast cancer is a form of cancer that is a result of breast cancer cells. It is most often found within the lobules of the breast or the ducts in the breast. The cause of cancer is when changes known as mutations occur in cells’ genes that regulate growth. The mutations allow cells to divide and expand in an uncontrolled manner.

Types of Breast Cancer

According to Dr. Poovamma C U the kind of breast cancer could also indicate the extent to which the cancer has been able to spread or not. The breast cancer in situ (ductal carcinoma in situ, or DCIS) can be described as a type of cancer that begins within a milk duct, but has not spread to the surrounding breast tissue. The term “invasive” (or an infiltrating) breast cancer is used to refer to any kind of breast cancer which has expanded (invaded) to the breast tissue around it.

Non-invasive breast cancers:

  • Ductal carcinoma in situ
  • Lobular carcinoma in situ

Invasive breast cancers:

  • Invasive ductal carcinoma
  • Invasive lobular carcinoma
  • Paget’s disease of the nipple
  • Inflammatory breast cancer
  • Phyllodes tumors of the breast
  • Locally advanced breast cancer
  • Metastatic breast cancer
