Even though vaping seems to expose users to fewer cancer-causing toxins than cigarettes, it can still have a lasting impact on your skin (and overall health). Whether you picked up the habit of vaping when they first hit the market or are using e-cigarettes to transition away from traditional cigarettes, you must know the risks.

Vapes have been around for decades but became incredibly popular among the younger demographic within the past five years. It’s no surprise that people have become more health conscious, which is why e-cigarette companies have wisely marketed vaping as a safe way to smoke. Vaping is considered a safer alternative to smoking cigarettes but there is absolutely no benefit to vaping if you don’t already smoke.

This might not be what you want to hear, but vaping certainly is not healthy. Research has shown that the nicotine found in vaping liquid can be addictive, just like the nicotine found in traditional cigarettes. And when nicotine is inhaled, it is absorbed through the lungs and then moves through the bloodstream, which is then distributed to the brain and other important organs. For kids, teens, and young adults, the threat nicotine poses is much more severe as it can impact brain development, concentration, learning, and memory.

Vaping has also been linked to lung disease and “popcorn lung” (scientifically known as bronchiolitis obliterans), which is inflammation that causes wheezing and shortness of breath. Over time, popcorn lung can cause thickening of the airways and scarring within the lung’s tiny sacs.

Unfortunately, the risks of vaping don’t stop there. Similar to smoking cigarettes, vaping can cause complications with wound healing and contact dermatitis, resulting in dry patches. Nicotine is also linked to premature aging, psoriasis, acne, and even worse, skin cancers like melanoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Because the nicotine found in vaping liquid dehydrates your skin, wrinkles and fine lines will present quickly among those who vape.

Not only will you feel gross and unhealthy on the inside from vaping, but you’ll notice changes on the outside, too.

Of course, the simplest way to reverse or prevent any skin damage from vaping is to quit vaping or smoking altogether. If you’re having difficulties quitting on your own, remember that your doctor or other health professionals can be a helpful resource.

Tweaking your diet can make a difference in combating premature aging. Adding more fresh fruits and vegetables to your diet, as well as staying hydrated can keep your skin looking youthful. It’s also important to prioritize sleep and wear sunscreen every day, even if you’re just going to work or school.

For less severe cases of dryness and premature aging linked to vaping, using skincare products that contain natural hydrating ingredients can bring back some of the volume lost.
