Research based on 50 years of data has revealed that those with severe sleep difficulties are at increased risk of depression and anxiety.

Cara Palma, Lead Author of the study and Director of the Sleep and Development Lab at Montana State University, Bozeman in the US state, said that lack of sleep weakens emotional intelligence and increases a person’s risk of anxiety and depression, according to media reports. Moreover, it also negatively affects positive emotions like happiness and contentment.

For the study, Cara Palma and her team analyzed data from 154 studies involving more than 5,700 people. They found that assessing sleep problems and their impact on emotions is critical to promoting mental health in a sleep-disordered society.
Future studies should seek to learn more about how sleep deprivation affects people of different ages, the researchers said. It is also important to understand why sleep deprivation affects some people more than others.
