Parents struggling to schedule Pfizer vaccines for children

Shipping delays are frustrating parents, just one day after the New Mexico Department of Health announced plans to rollout Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccines for children ages 5 to 11.On Tuesday, health officials said the state had received 30,000 doses to distribute.Appointments are also available for parents hoping to get their child vaccinated. “Everywhere from public health offices across the state, to pharmacies, to pediatricians,” said David Morgan, a spokesperson for NMDOH, said. Approximately 90,000 Pfizer vaccines are expected to arrive in New Mexico by Nov. 10. While some locations have already received the shots, others are met with shipping delay challenges.”We are aware that it’s a problem,” Morgan said. “We are aware that deliveries are not getting to medical providers in a timely of a manner as we had hoped for.”One parent told KOAT she received a cancellation text message from NMDOH, just one day after signing her child up for a Pfizer dose. However, she wasn’t alone. Out of 671 people who have rescheduled appointments for their children so far, at least 59 of them had to cancel or reschedule, according to NMDOH officials. “We’re very sorry for her and for other parents who are incredibly eager to be able to get their children vaccinated,” Morgan said. The department of health is also working on technical issue with its website. As of 3 p.m. on Nov. 4, NMDOH’s vaccination even calendar shows appointments for children ages 5 to 11 won’t be available until December. Morgan said that’s not accurate. “You know, I noticed that too,” Morgan said. “In Las Cruces, our public health office received our shipment of vaccines, and we’re going to start vaccinating children 5 to 11 starting tomorrow afternoon.”Morgan adds, while the department continues to work out a solution, it’s best that parents remain persistent, eager, and most of all patient.”Keep an eye on the website. It will take a few days for additional opportunities to vaccinate to be able to populate in there, but once they populate, they’ll be able to make an appointment and be able to get your children vaccinated,” Morgan said.
