Personalised medicine represents an exciting opportunity to improve the future of individualised healthcare for all citizens, holding much promise for disease treatment and prevention.

The term personalized medicine describes a practice of medicine in which genetic data is used to guide decisions regarding prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases. The important thing about personalized medicine is that it can overcome traditional medicine’s limitations as it is based on each patient’s unique genetic makeup. This allows health care providers to shift the focus from reaction to prevention and predict the risk of disease. Precision medicine or personalized medicine is a medical model in which medical decisions, practices, interventions and/or products are tailored according to the patient’s predicted response or disease risk.

  • Personalized medicine is not a new concept, it dates back many hundreds of years.
  • Scientists began to uncover the underlying causes of disease with the advancements in chemistry, histochemistry, and microscopy
  • During the 21st century, the sequencing of the human genome set in motion the transition from an idea to a reality of personalized medicine.

Need For Personalized Medicine :

  • Different illness with similar symptoms
  • Medications may work for some people but not for others.
  • The effectiveness of forty percent of drugs taken is questionable
  • Modern advances in genomics allow for more precise and effective treatment.
  • This is to prevent allergies and adverse effects.

Personalized medicine is based on genetic testing and clinical information, which allows predictions to be made about a person’s susceptibility to a disease, response to treatment, and course of the disease.

People who are proactive about their healthcare and longevity.

The use of medications on occasion by individuals with pharmacogenomics.

Optimizing diet and exercise for each individual based on their microbiome, genome, and epigenome.

2 . Patients –

E.g Cancer Patients — A genome sequencing study to determine the precise characteristics of tumors and guide treatment.

The genetic manipulation of certain cells of patients with certain infectious diseases will drastically reduce their morbidity and even health care costs. Eg. HIV

Disadvantages of Personalized Medicine:

  • A major concern of the growing use of personalised medicine is the moral issue of patient privacy.
  • Incidental findings are another ethical dilemma.
  • An unknown life-changing disease can cause mental distress and have a profound impact on a patient’s life.

The future of personalized medicine is full of high expectations –

Are scientists, innovators, healthcare providers, and others able to provide the most appropriate medicine, at the right dose, for the right person, at the right time, and at a reasonable price?

Can the healthcare sector develop effective financial models and incentives to integrate personalized medicine into clinical practice?

In order to achieve the goal of implementing personalized medicine comprehensively, these questions require immediate attention and coordinated action.
