We live in unusual times. It all gets a bit much some days. So we’re bringing you a much-needed dose of positivity to remind you that there’s inspiration, kindness and quirkiness out there too.

Nancy’s surfboard adventures

Nancy Meherne, a nonagenarian surfer from Christchurch, has been profiled by The Guardian. The 92-year-old says she’ll still be taking to the waves for as long as she can “do a little jump” to get herself and her board on the waves.

Meherne picked up surfing after borrowing her sons board and her own surfboard dates back to the ‘70s. Previously a music teacher, Meherne has taught everything from harmonica to xylophone, and enjoys dancing to classical music on the radio.

Time capsule finally found

After not being able to track down the 1887 time capsule they were looking for, and discovering another one in the process, contractors dismantling a pedestal that had raised up a statue of Confederate General Robert E Lee in Richmond, Virginia, USA appear to have found the lost holder container of artefacts.

The recovered box has been x-rayed and appears to hold books, coins, buttons and possibly even Civil War-era ammunition.

A big bear nap

Also in Virginia; a problem for people trying to take to the US state’s roads is very cute to look at.

A suburban road has been closed after four black bears, a mother and her three cubs, were spotted sleeping high up in a tree.

Local officials believe that “space, quiet, and time” will lead to the bears heading back to their natural habitat.

Aotearoa lakes in top 15 wonders list

Two South Island lakes have been named among the world’s most beautiful natural wonders. A list, compiled by luxury tourism company Kuoni, places Lake Tekapo in the Mackenzie region at number five, while Lake Matheson in the West Coast nabbed 13th place.

The list was generated by showing participants photos of destinations and then tracking where their eye was drawn. Peyto Lake in Canada took out the number one spot in the ranking.

Harry Potter celebration

Fans of the Harry Potter films are looking forward to the release of a special celebrating 20 years since the first movie was released. It has also been ten years since the last film in the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, was released.

Ahead of the special’s January debut, choice quotes have been released including this one from Baby Done star Matthew Lewis on his character Neville Longbottom: “…through all of life’s challenges, whether he was bullied at school or the things that happened in his childhood to his parents, he never veered from the path. He always stayed true to his ideals… and what was the right thing to do.”
