UK travel: Expert names the best road trips for autumn – ‘perfect antidote’ | Travel News | Travel

Britons looking to head on the road for a UK road trip are spoiled for choice. The UK has many beauty spots that could make for the perfect break, but which are best?

Ed also named his top road trips for the season, in no particular order.

Ed recommended heading to Sherwood Forest in Nottingham.

The Robin Hood’s playground is home to hundreds of species of birds, trees and plants.

The ancient woodland is also the home of the Major Oak, a tree of legend believed to be around 1,000 years old.

Another great place to head on a road trip was Castlewellan Forest Park in County Down.

The Northern Ireland forest park covers 450 hectares and offers plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities.

Britons can walk, cycle, horse ride, fish or go on a canoeing trip at Castlewellan Forest Park.

The park is also the home of the national Arboretum of Northern Ireland, which was started in 1740 and has trees from all over the world.

Some of the oldest trees in the British and Irish Isles are located at the Arboretum.

Back in England, Northumberland National Park is more than 1,050 square kilometres.

The northernmost national park in England is also the least visited.

But there are not only beautiful walks to take in Northumberland, it is also the location of some of the darkest skies in the UK.

Perfect for stargazing, the park has Dark Sky Discovery Sites from which Britons can look up and be awed by the night skies.

Britons who want to road trip in Wales can go to St Mary’s Vale in Monmouthshire.

The oak woodland is the perfect place for holidaymakers to birdwatch, with skylarks, housemartins, swallows, red grouse, buzzards, and the occasional red kite all calling this area home.

Active Britons can also climb Sugarloaf, one of the highest Black Mountains’ peaks, for views of South Wales, Brecon Beacons and south-west England.
