Wander List: From biosphere reserves in Madeira to ye olde groceries in Kildare

Fans of the BBC’s Amazing Hotels series will likely have Madeira on their radar after seeing not only the historic Reid’s Palace Hotel but also the Portuguese island’s natural wonders. Wild, rugged and lush in parts, it won Europe’s Leading Island Destination 2021 at the World Travel Awards.

The lesser known island of Porto Santo on the Madeira archipelago – home to 5,500 residents, and a 2.5-hour ferry ride from Madeira’s Funchal – has a biosphere reserve that’s well worth a visit for its flora and fauna, plant life and unspoiled beaches (though there are all-inclusive hotels on the 9km strand).
