What is the MIND diet?
It delays the onset of cognitive and neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Martha Clare Morris, a nutritional epidemiologist at Rush Medical University Centre, created the diet. In addition to brain health, the MIND diet has the added benefits of increasing metabolism and weight loss, lowering bad cholesterol levels, and preventing cardiovascular disease.
What does the MIND diet entail?
The MIND diet is a hybrid of the Mediterranean and DASH diets, combining the best of both. Consume foods such as leafy green vegetables, fresh fruits and berries of all kinds, lentils, and legumes, beans, nuts, seeds, whole and unrefined grains, fresh herbs, fish, poultry, and lean meat, olive oil, and red wine. It suggests avoiding foods high in fat, such as deep-fried foods, butter, and even cheese. Other no-nos include red meat and sugar.
The MIND diet is ideal for maintaining brain and body functions and is simple to follow if there are no severe dietary restrictions. However, as with any new diet, consult with your doctor before embarking on it.
