The term ‘Sedentary’ essentially means inactivity. Anyone that spends majority of their day sitting or lying down, with little to no exercise is living a sedentary lifestyle.

According to the CDC, more than 60 percent of U.S. adults are not getting enough physical activity, and 25 percent are not active at all. This isn’t too surprising because advancements in technology have made it easier to do everything from the comfort of our homes.

Think about it, many of us (myself included) work mostly behind a desk. I spend countless hours each day staring at a computer screen — — only getting up to use the bathroom or to get something to eat. For people like me, it is important to incorporate movement throughout the day. My only saving grace is that I work out most mornings; but I recently found out that may not be enough.

Even if I do a 30-minute cardio session, it still may not be enough to not be considered sedentary. According to , most adults should aim for about 10,000 steps per day. Unfortunately, I have not been as close to 10,000 steps as I initially thought I was.

Most of us don’t need to take 10,000 steps to fulfill our daily obligations. Much of what we do can be taken care of via our smartphones or computers, which explains why more people are having health issues.

According to the World Health Organization, sedentary lifestyles increase the risk of:

· Cardiovascular disease

· Anxiety and depression

· Diabetes

· Obesity

· Colon cancer

· Osteoporosis

· Lipid disorder

Since our lives require less movement, it has never been more important to make exercise a part of our daily routine. Exercise doesn’t have to be intense to be effective, we simply need to move more. Try walking the dog more often, taking the stairs instead of the elevator, or taking short walks after dinner.

For people that work behind a desk and have a few extra dollars, investing in a treadmill desk is an option too.

In addition to helping lower blood pressure, walking 10,000 steps per day has numerous benefits including:

· Aiding in weight loss

· Reducing anxiety

· Clearing your mind

· Better sleep

· Stabilizing blood glucose

Moving more will require us to adjustment our lives a bit, but our health is worth it. If you have any health issues that may be related to inactivity, increase your steps, and kick the sedentary lifestyle.
